Book review: New Frontier #2: Into The Void
BLURB:
As the Thallonian Empire succumbs to violence and insurrection, the U.S.S. Excalibur prepares to launch on her humanitarian mission of mercy. But her departure is destined to be a memorable one, as Calhoun contends with an unexpected stowaway, a stormy relationship with his crew, and -- light-years away -- frightened refugees aboard a dying ship.
REVIEW:
The story picks up immediately after the first book, with the USS Excalibur setting off on their voyage to the Thallonian Empire. The crew, some of which have already served together, get to know each other and the Captain MacKenzie Calhoun and newly installed Executive Officer, Commander Elizabeth Shelby (from Star Trek TNG: Best of Both Worlds) come to terms with working closely together after the previous engagement.
New species are introduced in this book, including the security chief, Zak Kebron and the Chief Engineer, Commander Burgoyne 172 - a Hermat. The Chief CONN Officer is of interest as well, with his super human ability of multi-tasking his brain and mental abilities. Lord Si Cwan, a prince from the fallen empire, having stowed away on the Excalibur has been installed as an Ambassador.
Although, this book starts off slow, it promises to lead into the third book where action and excitement are waiting. The Excalibur finally enters Thallonian space only to receive a distress signal from a freighter carrying refugees and a science vessel potentially carrying Si Cwan's younger sister, Kalindra.
On one foot, I am slightly disappointed how the author has ended the book just when the story is getting good, however, along with the first book (see review last month), this can be considered as an introduction to the whole 'universe' and the over-arcing story plot. I can only hope his third book has far more excitement and action that the previous two.
I give this book 2.5 photon torpedoes (as book 1: House of Cards)
