First contact goes awry
The USS Pegasus (NCC-53847-E) was returning to Starbase 425 in the distant Balkora system along the Federation-Cardassian border when it received a distress call from another vessel. Responding, the crew of the Pegasus quickly learned that they were making first contact with a species who had just achieved their first warp flight. The Pegasus returned the wayward warp ship and her pilot to their homeworld in the Alpha Theta system.
Investigative reporter Rikka Pal learned that Captain Edward Walsh was attacked by a military offical from the planet's nation of Lantar. The captain survived, and the military official was handed over to the Lantaran government for prosecution. The rest of the Pegasus's encounter with the planet's inhabitants was no less dramatic. At the request of the Lantaran government, the Pegasus agreed to mediate peace negotiations between them and a rival nation, Selyosia. During a break, the Selyosian King kidnapped Captain Walsh and one other Pegasus crew member.
Sources on Starbase 425 report that the possibly deranged king held the two ransom, demanding the Pegasus's compliment of shuttles and other technology. Although severely injured, the two officers were rescued by the Pegasus. No ransom was paid.
A senior Federation government official, who asked not to be named, told FNN that the Federation would most likely review the crew's reports, but was unlikely to open a full investigation of the matter.
In related news, Starfleet Command promoted Captain Walsh to the rank of commodore.
