Lancelot Instrumental in Preservation of Romulans
For reasons still unexplained, the shockwave moved at multi-warp speeds, leaving Starfleet and Romulan ships scrambling to escape imminent destruction. True to the ideals of the Federation, the task force stayed until the last few seconds, fervently beaming aboard evacuees in hopes of saving as many lives as possible. Sadly, the mass chaos of Romulan ships trying to escape held the group up, delaying most of its departure until it was too late. Most of the task force was lost as the shockwave obliterated Romulus and Remus.
The USS Lancelot and the USS Sovereign are believed to be the only Starfleet ships that escaped that day, though the Sovereign has not been heard from since. The Lancelot’s successful flight out of harm’s way can be attributed to many factors, though superb flying from Lieutenant Cassie O’Donnell and defensive weapons work from Lieutenant Nathan Rowe certainly rank high among them. While the Lancelot was able to break its way into open space and jump to warp ahead of the shockwave, doing so did not provide immediate safety for the Lancelot’s crew.
While Lieutenant Bejal Tarin had used his intelligence resources to detain potentially dangerous passengers upon beam up, the Romulan refugees still managed to put the ship at risk. Lacking sufficient understanding as to why the Lancelot had broken orbit so soon, a large contingent of refugees in Cargo Bay 2 incited a riot in hopes of breeching containment and taking the Lancelot’s Bridge. Allegedly, they aimed to turn the ship around in order to rescue family and friends who’d been left behind in Ki Baratan, not knowing that Romulus had already been destroyed.
After an impassioned speech from the Captain and an impressive show of force from Captain Akers and his marines, the Romulans eventually gained an understanding of the situation and stood down. Unfortunately, casualties were incurred before hostilities ceased. Several Starfleet officers and marines lost their lives in ‘The Battle for Cargo Bay 2,’ as it’s been dubbed by members of the Lancelot’s crew. While Captain James Smith III was rumored as willing to give his right arm for peace, little did he know that peace would indeed come to that.
A Romulan citizen named D’tan Terrix – who, in fact, was not Romulan at all – revealed himself as a Changeling when he drugged Commander Evan Logan, the Lancelot’s XO, and took his place. The Changeling apparently recognized Lieutenant Bearis 8 – a defective Vorta clone who defected to the Federation over a decade ago – and vowed to destroy him for betraying the Dominion. Wearing the XO’s face, the Changeling made his way to Cargo Bay 2, where he attempted to end the Vorta chief engineer with a phaser blast. Captain Smith leapt into the beam’s path – avoiding outright death thanks to his combat armor – but lost his right arm in the process. Proving that his loyalties belonged to Starfleet and the Federation, Lieutenant Bearis overcame his genetic programming and vaporized the Changeling before it could hurt anyone else.
With both the Romulan and Changeling threat finally ended, the Lancelot made its way towards the nearest Romulan colony world. Once there, the Lancelot delivered just over 10,000 Romulan evacuees. While Starfleet lost many more lives during the evacuation, there are still countless humans populating the stars. As for the Romulans, mass extinction now looms over them like the great raptor bird they so devotedly idolize.
